Jelena Jankovic of Serbia the current World No5 celebrated victory following her Women’s Singles Third Round match against Jarmila Groth of Australia on day seven of the French Open at Roland Garros on Saturday May 30, 2009 in Paris, France and she is through to the next round.

The headline of the event on Friday though was Portugal’s Michelle Larcher de Brito who lost to France’s Aravane Rezai. This was not after the French player had complained to the umpire that her opponent was making too much noise and the crowd were booing in agreement. Being billed as the loudest grunter for some time, the tournament may be relieved to hear she is out and not through to the next round!

Other third round winners that make it through to the fourth include The Russian Maria Sharapova (photo above) , who is currently ranked 102 in the world after having shoulder problems for the past year, beat Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova 1-6 6-3 6-4. Venus Williams the current World no3 failed to make it through to the fourth round and was beaten by 29th-seeded Agnes Szavay of Hungary, not a happy day for her but she knows that playing on clay surfaces is not her strong point and she much prefers grass!
