Olga Kurylenko, Daniel Craig, Gemma Arterton, Dame Judi Dench and Marc Forster were in town last night for the premiere of the NEW and long awaited Bond Film “Quantum of Solace” part of the ongoing 52nd BFI London Film Festival. Quantum of Solace is the long awaited sequel to “Casino Royale” which screened in 2006 and received critical acclaim. Prince Harry and Prince William were the royal family members that also attended.

Quantum of Solace Details:Quantum of Solace (2008) is the 22nd James Bond film by EON Productions. The sequel to the 2006 film Casino Royale, it is directed by Marc Forster, and features Daniel Craig’s second performance as James Bond. In the film, Bond battles Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a member of the Quantum organisation posing as an environmentalist, who intends to stage a coup d’état in Bolivia to take control of its water supply. Bond seeks revenge for the death of Vesper Lynd, and is assisted by Camille (Olga Kurylenko), who also wants to kill Greene.

The Plot:
Almost an hour after Casino Royale, Bond is involved in a car chase in Siena, Italy. The official synopsis shows that after his capture, Mr. White reveals to Bond and M that White’s organisation, Quantum, has agents in Her Majesty’s Government and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Forensic evidence of an MI6 traitor leads Bond to Haiti, where he meets Camille, who then helps him find Dominic Greene, a ruthless businessman and chairman of Greene Planet, the legitimate cover for Quantum.
Greene intends to use his government contacts to help overthrow the current regime in Bolivia, and place the exiled General Medrano as the head of state. Medrano will in exchange give him a barren piece of land, which will actually give them total control of the nation’s water supply. Bond travels to Austria and South America to unravel Greene’s plan, staying one step ahead of the CIA, terrorists, and M whilst trying to keep his desire for retribution over Vesper Lynd’s death in check.

The Verdict:
Casino Royal was a luxurious and steady paced film where we see the formative stages of Bond, the early days. A critically brilliant and different bond film from its predecessors and one with a complex storyline and character set with epsionage plots and sub plots where a chain of events lead to Bond having loved and lost which opens the doorway for the next bond film. Casino Royale really is a primer for the next installment but was a superb film none the less.
Quantum of Solace is that next installment and all the betrayal, grief and loss and hatred, that bond experienced in Casino Royale is unleashed in a cold emotionless tsunami. This film is a completely different animal. Casino Royale is “the cause”, Quantum of Solace is “the effect”
The opening sequence is 8 minutes of high octane car chasing through alpine tunnels with Bond in an Aston Martin DB9. Bond then globe trots from the villas of italy to the slums of haiti, the coffee houses of vienna on to the darkly beautiful bolivia.
The film goes from car chases to boat chases, biplane dogfights, chain dangling scafolding scraps, rooftop chases, sewer pursuit, more action, short quiet spells then back into a never ending killing spree with bond turning into a vendetta killing machine on a mission, then back to more rollercoaster action.
The normal bond film formula is a killer opening sequence normally action based, then followed by a quieter spell, sometimes lengthy, of story development, plot, intrigue, bond girls, gadgets, espionage and villians. Quantum of Solace smashes this tradition into a thousand pieces with an 8 minute action extravaganza which we have to say is incredibly good but that same relentless pace is kept up throughout the whole film which incidentally is shorter at less than 2 hours. For Bond purists you may need to take some ibuprofen with you, you’ll be in for shock.
If a film is “fruit cake” then the action sequences are the currants and raisins and the icing, and the story and plot are the cake dough. Casino Royale has this mix near perfect to produce a cake of distinction. Quantum of Solace on the other hand is a cake with an overdose of currants and rasins, with just too much icing at the expense of the cake mix, the result is an oversweet experience which just manages to stay together.
Quantum of Solace is a modern bond and its primarily an action film. Daniel Craig plays the new gritty bond, this one does get his hands dirty, does get cuts and bruises, and even gets uncontrollably drunk. In short he is more believable. Olga Kurylenko plays Camille who we would say is a mirror version of this new bond in female form who he tema up with…………he has indeed met his match! M played by Judi Dench is also more icily menacing than the previous outings and has concerns over Bonds’ mental and emotional stability in this film. Gemma Arterton plays another agent known as agent fields which bond has a fleeting association with and who shares his bed with him..
This film has split the critics down the line with half in the happy camp giving it a thumbs up, and the other not so happy camp that don’t like all out action films at the expense of story and plot giving it the thumbs down. This film also divides the sexes with women not that keen (severe lack of any romance and relationships in this film), and the men giving it the yes vote.
Quantum of Solace has taken a big gamble in basically breaking out of the traditional Bond mould, the gamble seems to work, question is where does it fo from here? Casino Royale was a 4 star film. If you haven’t seen Casino Royale it’s recommended to see this first to get the full SP as Quantum continues 1 hour after but Quantum is quite watchable as a standalone film. Quantum of Solace is a cracking pure action film, and should be viewed in that vain, but if you’re looking for the Casino Royale panache and complexity it will not be there. Either way its essential viewing and action film fans will love it as it’s a quality one, and critics aside it will be a box office smash, we will be surprised if it isn’t. Not quite a 4 star film. Rating: 3 and half stars out of 5.
